Living up the holidays in Malaysia

There are 2 kinds of holidays in Malaysia. They are categorized into state and national levels. State holidays are smaller or more specialized holidays that are celebrated in the relevant states itself, whereas national holidays are grander and are celebrated by the entire nation. From the many national holidays, the one that gave me the greatest impact as a Malaysian holiday is no doubt the one and only ‘Hari Raya Puasa’. 

말레이시아에서는 2가지 종류의 휴가가 있다. 그들은 주 및 국가 단계로 분류있다. 주 휴일은 작고 전문적인 휴일이지만 반면으로 국가 단계로 분류 되있는 휴일들은 전체 국민이 기념하는 휴일이다. 많은 공휴일 중에서 나는 가장 큰 영향을 받은 휴가는 '하리 라야 푸 아사'이다.

Hari Raya Puasa or also known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a holiday that honors the end of Ramadan (the Islamic holy month of the fasting period). ‘Fitr’ means to break the fast and this is what this holiday is all about. After a long phase of fasting for about 29 to 30 days, Muslims from all over the nation come together in their traditional outfits, showing a common aim of unity.

‘하리 라야 푸 아사’ 또는 ‘하리 라야 Aidilfitri’로 알려진 휴일이다. 이 휴일은 라마단 (이슬람들이 금식 하는 기간) 의 끝을 축하하는 날이다. '피트 르'는 이 금식 기간을 끝낸다는 의미가 담겨져있다. 29~30일 동안 금식의 긴 단계를 거친 후에, 이슬람교는 전통 의상을 입고 전국 각지에서 화합의 공통 목표를 보여주는 날이라고 생각하면 된다.

Before getting together with their friends, family and acquaintances in their homes, they go to through the procedure of praying to pay their respect before final breaking their fast. Fasting is a way of cleansing yourself of any sins and on Hari Raya, you ask for forgiveness. I found this to be very refreshing considering how since no one goes by without creating some kind of sin; you get to have a fresh start via this occasion over good friends and food.

친구, 가족 및 가정에서 지인과 함께 시간을 보내기 전에, 그들은 금식을 깨기 전에 존경을 지불기 위하여 기도를 한다. 금식은 자신을 처벌하는 방법이고, 하리 랴야날에 용서를 받기 위해서 기도를 한다. 누구든 잘못을 할 수있고 하니깐 나는 이런 의미에 상쾌한 느낌을 들게 되었다. 상쾌한 느낌을 들게 된 이유는, 이 휴일을 통해 좋은 친구들 만나며, 맛난 음식도 먹고 새로운 출발을 할 수있게 때문이었다.

This holiday is grand in a way that almost every Muslim, i.e. most Malaysians will return to their home towns (balik kampung) to basically have an enjoyable time with their families that they rarely get to see with their busy schedules. Those people staying in the cities hold a party-like event called an ‘open house’. During an open house, the owner stays at home to invite family and friends (even non Muslims) to entertain them for that day. It is an incredibly pleasant experience! Having been to an open house myself, I can say without a doubt that it is amazing. You get to taste amazing Malaysian delicacies made at home and be introduced to many people via your friends and even fool around with firecrackers at night. Although there are some complains about the dangers and noise of firecrackers, it is still done occasionally and it makes you feel like a child again and it is utterly splendid!

이 휴가는 거의 모든 무슬림 즉, 대부분의 말레이시안 사람들이 고향으로 돌아가는 날이다. 평소에 바쁜 생활 때문에 가족들을 못봤었기 때문에, 이번 기회에 즐거운 시간을 보내고 집에서 쉴 수있는 휴가이다. 도시에 머무는 사람들은 '오픈 하우스'라는 파티 같은 행사를 개최한다. 오픈 하우스에는 소유자가 가족과 친구들을 (심지어 비 이슬람교도)집으로 초대한다. 나도 직접 초대 받아 가본 기억이 있는데, 매우 즐거운 경험이라고 생각했다! 맛난 말레이시아 요리를 먹어볼수도 있고, 친구를 통해 많은 사람들에게 소개도 받으며, 또는 밤에 폭죽를 터트리는 놀이도 할 수있다. 폭죽의 위험성과 소음에 대한 불평이 있지만, 그것은 가끔씩만 수행한다. 다시 아이가 된 느낌을 들게 되서 너무나 좋은 경험이다!

Another perk of Hari Raya is that adults give you packets containing some money. Though it is not a lot, it is great for some pocket money that we can spend with friends after the Raya break is over!

하리 라야의 또 다른 신난는 점은 바로 용돈을 받기 때문이다. 많은 금액은 아니지만, 받은 용돈으로 친구들과 휴식이 끝나 커피 마시던,  영화를 볼 기회가 생겨서 무지 좋다. 

The thing that really made me notice how grand this holiday is how during Hari Raya, the streets, shops, restaurants are all closed and quiet. It is like everyone is off work and is at home being with their loved ones, enjoying that one special day. It is kind of amazing how these holidays exist to allow people (not just Muslims) to create memories with great people. 

하리 랴야 휴가 동안에는 , 거리들이나, 상점, 레스토랑이 모두 폐쇄하고 조용한 것을 보고 나는 이 휴가의 중요성을 느꼈다. 모든 사람들은 일에서 잠시 휴식을 갖고, 사랑하는 사람들과 함께 특별한 시간을 보내는 날이기 때문이었다. 단지 이슬람교도이 아니여도, 이 휴일을 통해 많은 사람들은 좋은 사람들과 추억을 만들 수 있는 날으로서 존재하는 것 같다.
