Loy Loy Krathong

I hope everyone is having a great Chu-suk, meeting relatives, eating good food and paying respect to their ancestors. The best thing about holidays like Chu-suk or Thanksgiving is probably meeting families and celebrating the abundance of food after the harvest! What would be the Thai equivalent of Chu-suk? That would probably be the Loy Krathong festival.

가족과 함께 맛있는 음식을 먹고 얘기하면서 재미있는 한가위를 보내고 있길 바란다. 추석이나 미국의 추수감사절 같은 명절의 특징은 맛있는 음식과 가족을 만나는 것 일것이다. 그렇다면 우리나라의 한가위와 같은 명절은 무엇일까? 비슷한 시기에 있는 로이 끄라통 일 것이다.

Loy Krathong is a festival of water and light. “Loy” means “to float” and a “krathong” is a small decorative raft, so Loy Krathong literally means to “float a raft”. It is held on the twelfth lunar month(November), when the moon is full, which is also the period after a long rainy season, so the water levels of rivers, and streams are at their peak. There are many speculations about the origins of Loy Krathong. The most widely known one is that the favorite concubine of a Sukhothai King, Nang Noppamas, created a lotus-shaped “boat” – a krathong – to float in the river to honor the Buddha. Another theory is to thank the water goddess “Pra Mae Khongka” for an abundant supply of water, and also to ask for forgiveness for abusing water. Some also say that it was developed from a ceremony to honor the Buddha’s footprint on the Nammathanati River bed in India, which in turn evolved from a Brahman festival called “Chong Pa Rieng”, which worships the Hindu gods Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.

로이 끄라통은 물과 빛의 향연이다. “로이”는 “띄우다”, “끄라통”은 작은 “뗏목”, “로이 끄라통”은 “뗏목을 띄우다”라고 말할 수 있다. 음력의 열 두 번째 달인 11월, 보름달일 때 시작한다. 이는 길고 긴 우기의 끝이기 때문에, 강과 개울의 수위가 가장 높을 때 이기도 하다. 로이 끄라통의 기원은 정확하지 않으나 많은 설들이 있다. 가장 많이 전해지는 것은, 수코타이 왕조의 왕의 첩 중 “낭 노파마스”가 부처에게 경의를 표하기 위하여 연꽃 모양의 뗏목을 만든 것이 “끄라통”의 시조라고 한다. 또 다른 설은 물의 여신인 “프라 매 콩카”에게 물을 주는 것에 대하여 감사하고, 더럽혀서 용서를 구하기 위하여 생긴 것이라고 한다. 또는 힌두신 시바, 비슈누, 브라마를 숭배하는 “총 파 리엥”이라는 브라만 축제에서 파생되어 부처가 남마타나티 강바닥에 남긴 발자국을 기리는 축제에서 발전한 것이라고도 한다.

How is Loy Krathong celebrated? The most important ceremony of Loy Krathong is actually floating the krathong. It usually consists of a base from a banana tree, decorated with folded banana leaves, orchids, tropical flowers, and a candle and joss sticks to wish luck. Whilst Loy Krathong is a festival to ask for forgiveness and thanks for using the water, ironically, there are problems concerning the environment. Sometimes the krathong is made from bread, or Styrofoam, and while the bread-made krathong or the natural krathong will disintegrate naturally, the Styrofoam-made krathong will not. Despite the advantages of the styrofaom-made krathongs (cheap, easily available, floats easily) there are campaigns in Thailand to not use Styrofoam-made krathongs. However, there is ongoing debate on the dangers of krathongs; the natural made krathongs, although bio-degradable, sink to the bottom blocking and clouding the waterways, and it is difficult to clean them. The Styrofoam krathongs may not be bio-degradable, but because they float, it is easy for people to scoop them out of the water. Nevertheless, because it is hard to recycle the Styrofoam krathongs, it probably is a better idea to use natural krathongs.

로이 끄라통은 어떻게 기념하는가? 로이 끄라통의 가장 중요한 의식은 끄라통을 띄우는 것이다. 끄라통은 바나나 나무로 만든 받침, 바나나 잎으로 접은 장식, 난초, 화려한 꽃, 초와 향초로 만들어 진다. 로이 끄라통이 물에게 감사하고 용서를 구하는 축제이지만, 이상하게도 수질오염의 문제가 생겼다. 끄라통은 빵이나 스티로폼으로 만들어지기도 한다. 그리고 빵이나 풀로 만들어진 끄라통은 환경친화적으로 분해되지만, 스티로폼으로 만든 끄라통은 그러지 못하다. 그래서 그 장점에도 불구하고 (저렴한 값, 쉽게 구할 수 있음, 물에 쉽게 뜸) 스티로폼 끄라통의 사용을 반대하는 분위기다. 하지만 논쟁은 쉽게 그치지 않는다; 풀로 만든 끄라통도 자연적으로 분해되지만, 시간이 지나면 밑으로 가라앉아서 물을 오염시키고 수로를 막기도 한다. 스티로폼 끄라통은 물에 띄기 때문에 쉽게 건져낼 수는 있다. 그러나, 결국 수거한 스티로폼 끄라통을 처리하기 힘들기 때문에, 풀로 만든 끄라통이 더 환경 친화적인 듯하다.

So after people choose what kind of krathong to float, at night, they take their krathong and go to a nearby river, stream or beach, because water is an element that people believe that it would cleanse them, taking away their bad luck and bring good luck instead. They light the joss sticks and candles, and float their krathongs away praying for good luck. In Chiang Mai, Loy Krathong is called Yi Peng, which means the second month in the old Thai Lanna calendar. Instead of floating krathongs in waterways, they float sky lanterns called “khom loi”. So in Loy Krathong, waterways and the sky are scattered with glittering lights, creating a spectacular view. It is also a wonderful way to experience Thai culture; people will dress up into the vivid Thai national costumes, there are Thai dance performances to enjoy, sometimes a competition for the most beautiful, intricate and creative krathong, a beauty pageant called Noppamas (to remember Nang Noppamas), a parade of the Noppamas and lanterns and fantastic fireworks to end the wonderful night.

어떤 끄라통을 쓸까를 정한 다음엔 사람들은 밤에 끄라통을 들고 가까운 강, 개울, 또는 해변을 찾아간다. 왜냐하면 물은 사람을 정화시켜서, 화는 가져가고, 복을 가져다 주는 원소라고 믿기 때문이다. 향과 초에 불을 붙이고 복을 간절히 빌면서 끄라통을 물에 띄어보낸다. 치앙마이에는 로이 끄라통이 이 펭이라고 불린다. 옛 태국 왕조인 란나 달력에 의하면 이 펭은 “두 번째 달”이라고 한다. 치앙마이에서는 끄라통을 띄우는 대신 하늘에 “콤 로이”라는 등을 띄운다. 그래서 로이 끄라통의 태국은 하늘길과 수로가 반짝이는 불빛들로 수 놓여서 아름다운 광경을 만들어 낸다. 로이 끄라통은 태국 문화를 즐기기 위한 좋은 기회이다. 멋진 전통의상을 입고, 전통 무용 공연도 하고, 가장 아름답고, 정교하고, 창의적인 끄라통 대회도 열리고, 낭 노파마스를 기리는 미인대회인 노파마스 대회를 하고 그 우승자인 노파마스와 등들의 행진도 기다린다. 그리고 마지막에는 환상적인 불꽃놀이가 아름다운 축제의 끝을 장식한다.

Loy Krathong is a truly culturally rich festival that combines and celebrates people, music, art, tradition, history and nature. Not only is it a visually enticing sight to see waterways glittering with candlelight and flowers, it is also educational; nature can seem harsh, after a long stormy rainy season, but it can also be very rewarding, reminding people to be grateful and respectful towards nature. 로이 끄라통은 사람, 음악, 예술, 역사와 자연을 기리는 아주 문화적으로 풍요로운 축제이다. 수로가 반짝이는 매력적인 모습을 보여주는 것에 그치지 않는다, 교훈적이기도 한다는 것이다. 길고 잔인하게 강력한 우기를 지내고, 사람들은 자연을 원망하기도 한다, 그러나 로이 끄라통을 통해서 물에 대한 고마움, 농사를 한 보람, 자연의 위대함을 사람들은 느끼게 된다. 이를 통해 많은 사람들이 로이 끄라통의 보름달도 즐길 수 있었으면 한다!
