The Unique and Useful of These Public Transportation. By Windu

There are many kind of public transportation in Indonesia. Of course we have taxi and buses. People usually take taxi if they don’t have enough time or these days taxi also become a life style that they should choose. But since taxi cost much money, especially for the people who live in big ci ties such as Jakarta, choosing taxi sometimes become not a wise choice. In big cities like Jakarta, which always has traffic jam every day and every time, going from one area to another area in Jakarta could be like a long journey, and if we taxi, could you imagine how much it cost? Even though taxi tariff starts from around 800 won, but traffic jam could make the taxi fee become really high and expensive.

For the people in other cities, besides buses they also have some traditional public transportation. In Kalimantan Island, due to their land which has several rivers, people have no choices except taking traditional boat or they should take really long road that takes too much time to go to some places. School students every morning and afternoon also use boat to go to their school. It is really convenient for students because it doesn’t take much time and it’s cheap. They just need to pay around 120 won, and sometimes if they don’t have money, the driver will just smile to them.

Besides that, in South Kalimantan, people also use traditional boat while selling their products such as vegetables, fruits or many kind of daily needs. We called it floating market, since they do economic and market activities above boat in the river. It is really unique for foreign tourist and even for other Indonesian who live in another islands.

In Jogjakarta, one of the most famous cities in Indonesia, especially  for foreigners because of its culture which is still protected by government and the local people. Local people still use traditional public transportation in their daily activities. Becak, this transportation is driven by one person who sits in the behind and similar as bicycle this person is responsible to ride using pedal and their energy. People still choose becak because it is really convenient and comfortable. They could feel relax because one becak only will take one or two people from one family. So, there will be no stranger even it is public transportation. The price is also cheap enough. It cost starts from 6000won to up depends on how far you want.

In Jogjakarta as so called ‘back to your culture’ also gives another option to citizen and foreigners. They have ‘dokar’ as another unique and useful public transportation. Dokar uses horse to drag this transportation, people of course will feel relax in on hand, and in another hand they will feel really nice and close with the nature and the city. You can feel and enjoy the city as like tourist even though this is your city. Many foreigners also try to get on Dokar and go around Jogjakarta while having a nice ride and in the same time having beautiful pictures of the city.
