Thailand Night Markets

The lively chatter, narrow serpentine alleys, combined with the aroma of fresh fruits and fish; these are the sensory experiences that one encounters at a typical traditional market. A “tal laad” is the Thai word for market. Want to see the real life of locals in a country? Then head to their traditional markets. There exists many markets in Thailand, such as the famous floating market (tal laad naam), Chatuchak(Jatujak or J.J), Maeklong market which has an operating railway penetrating the market itself. Not only are they big tourist attractions but an aspect that influences Thai locals’ lives.

Night markets are fun, even if you don’t buy anything

시끄러운 말소리, 좁고 꼬불꼬불한 골목길, 그리고 싱싱한 과일과 생선의 냄새는 시장에서 익숙한 경험하는 것들이다. 시장은 태국어로 “딸랏”이라고 부른다 그리고 그 곳 현지인들의 진짜 삶을 보고 싶다면 그들의 전통 시장으로 가보자! 태국에는 많은 시장들이 있다; 그 중에 잘 알려진 시장들은 수상시장 (딸랏 남), 짜뚜짝 시장, 또는 시장 한가운데로 기차가 아무렇지도 않게 지나가는 메 끌롱 시장이다. 이러한 시장들은 중요한 관광수입이 되기도 하지만 태국사람들의 삶에서도 중요한 역할을 한다.

Whether it means grocery shopping or clothes hunting, Thai markets are a great place to shop at a wallet-friendly price. I remember the pungent smell of fish and seafood, and the variety of fish, shellfish, shrimp, crabs, and the variety of herbs, seasonal fruits, spices and vegetables that are used in the famously rich aromatic Thai cuisine. There are also vendors that sell cooked food that they sell in a plastic bag, like green curry because Thai people do not cook that much at home.

태국의 재래시장에서 어떤 것을 사든, 태국 시장은 지갑이 고마워할 곳이다. 나는 태국 시장의 해산물의 바다 냄새와 너무나 다양한 생선, 해산물, 야채, 독특한 향이 나기로 유명한 태국음식에 쓰이는 향신료와 열대과일의 종류가 생각이 나고, 가끔 그립기도 하다. 그리고 가장 고마운 것은, 태국 사람들이 집에서 밥을 해먹지 않기 때문에, 갓 만들어진 반찬 또는 국을 비닐봉지에 도시락처럼 포장해서 사 갈수도 있다.

“Train Market” or “Ta laad rot fai”

Sometimes I would go with my friends to a night market, We would go around every vendor, then fashion items and “fake” cosmetics that were around 100~150baht would be in our shopping bags if we smiled and asked “rot hai dai mai kha?” which meant “can we please have a discount?”. Then if we were hungry, we would grab the street food. Street food is amazing in Thailand; phad thai (the famous Thai fried noodles), som tam (papaya salad), barbequed meat, fresh fruits was on the menu and we would wash it down with mango, lime, watermelon or coconut fruit shakes.

 그리고 친구들과 야시장을 헤집고 다니면서 “롯 하이 다이 마이 카?”(깎아줄 수 있어요? 라는 뜻)라고 물어보면 순식간에 가방은 옷, 화장품으로 무거워졌다. 100~200바트 정도(우리나라 돈으로 4000~6000원)이니 그 당시 고등학생이었던 나에게는 정말 고마운 가격이었다. 그리고 배가 고파지면, 길거리 음식을 먹으러 간다! 우리나라의 떡볶이, 어묵, 순대가 맛있는 것처럼, 태국 길거리 음식도 환상적이다; 팟타이, 쏨땀 (파파야 샐러드), 꼬치구이, 싱싱한 과일과 망고, 라임, 수박, 코코넛 주스를 곁들이면 행복한 쇼핑이 끝이 난다!

My most recent experience at a Thai market was not the most pleasant one. Recently I visited the famous Night bazaar of Chiangmai. Since I know once can find great deals at night markets I was very excited to do some serious shopping. Their Night bazaar was serving tourists; they were basically selling all the things that were made to rip off ignorant tourists, such as factory made “handmade craftwork” at a ridiculous price. I was thoroughly disappointed, and I would recommend tourists NOT to waste their time at these places – you will probably be ripped off for products that you will regret buying. If you want to know the REAL Thai local culture, go to a local Thai market - yes, they won’t speak good English, but you will find better shopping there.

하지만 나의 가장 최근에 태국 시장 경험은 그다지 좋지 않았다. 몇 주 전에 나는 치앙마이의 유명한 야시장을 방문했다. 나는 야시장을 너무 좋아해서 잔뜩 기대에 부풀어 있었다. 그러나 치앙마이는 관광도시이기 때문에 그 야시장도 관광객들을 상대로 영업을 하고 있었고, 무지한 관광객들에게 터무니 없는 가격으로 “핸드메이드 공예품”(하지만 실제로는 대량생산되는)를 팔고 있었다. 재래시장을 기대했던 나에겐 크나큰 실망이었고, 혹시 태국을 관광하려는 사람들에게는 이런 시장에 가려는 것을 말리고 싶다. 나중에 후회하고 싶지 않다면, 이런 곳에서 많은 돈을 쓰거나 오래 있지 않을 것을 당부한다. 진짜 태국을 보고 싶다면, 현지인들이 가는 시장에 가야 한다 – 물론, 의사소통이 어렵겠지만, 우리에겐 바디랭귀지가 있고, 훨씬 더 좋은 구매를 할 수 있다!

What I find most interesting, now that I live in Korea is that, although the Korean traditional market is struggling – hence the government’s efforts to revive traditional markets – Thai markets are managing well. Would you hang around Noryangjin market with your friends in Korea? It’s certainly possible in Thailand, you could always sip a beer on the deserted train at Ta laad nad rot fai (the Train market) in Bangkok! Although I am not that fond of tourist markets, Thai people are utilizing them well as a tourist attraction and income. I don’t think Thailand is in a hurry to get rid of their markets anytime soon!

내가 최근에 느꼈던 점은, 우리나라의 재래시장은 힘들어 하고 있지만 (대형마트에 대한 규제와 재래시장 살리기 운동을 보면 나타난다) 태국 시장들은 그래도 잘 운영되고 있다는 점이다. 아직 태국 사람들의 수입이 크지 않아서 값이 싼 시장으로 몰리는 현상인지는 모르겠지만, 태국의 시장은 그저 “장보기”만 하는 곳이 아닌 듯 하다. 우리는 노량진 시장에 친구들과 놀러 가지 않지만 방콕의 기차 시장 (딸랏 낫 롯 파이)에서는 친구들과 버려진 기차객실에 앉아서 맥주를 마시며 얘기를 나눌 수 있다. 마지막으로, 나는 관광객을 대상으로 한 시장을 좋아하진 않지만, 짭짤한 관광수입을 위해 잘 활용되고 있기 때문에, 태국에 대형 마트가 없는 것은 아니지만, 재래시장의 위기로 보기엔 아직 이른 듯 하다!
