'Pasar malam' (Night Martet in Malaysia)

When you think of traditional markets in Malaysia, you think of ‘Pasar malam’. When you directly translate this word in Malay or Indonesian, it can be interpreted as ‘night market’. Pasar malam is a type of street market that opens usually in residential neighborhoods and it is only open during the evening

This street market is not open every single day but only a few days a week. This is because the traders rotate or move around varied neighborhoods to sell their goods around numerous places. What makes Pasar malam so great is the variety of items that they sell! It consists of an assortment of stalls which sells goods from vegetables, fruits, drinks, snacks, bread, clothes, shoes, ornaments, toys, watches and so on. The list just goes on and on. If there is a particular thing that you are looking to purchase for a reasonable price, Pasar malam is the place to go to. Another perk of Pasar malam are the pirated DVDs, CDs and computer software. The popularity of these pirated items is usually notable because it would be much more expensive to purchase the item in its original state.

이 길거리 시장은 매일 열리지는 않으며, 일주일에 며칠만 열린다. 이것은 상인들이 그들의 물건을 많은 곳에 팔기 위해 다양한 지역을 순회하거나 돌아다니기 때문이다. Pasar malam을 굉장하게 만드는 것은 그들이 파는 물품들의 다양함이다! Pasar malam은 채소, 과일, 음료, 스낵, 빵, 옷, 신발, 장식품, 장난감, 시계 등등을 파는 가판대의 모음으로 이루어져 있다. 이 열은 끊임없이 계속된다. 당신이 적당한 가격에 구매하려는 물건이 있다면, Pasar malam에 가보라. Pasar malam의 다른 장점은 불법 복제 DVD, CD, 컴퓨터 소프트웨어이다. 이 불법 복제품들의 인가는 현저한 편인데 이것은 정품을 구매하려면 너무 비싸기 때문이다.

There is a certain excitement whilst shopping in a Pasar malam and this is the beauty of haggling. Usually, the sellers call out unreasonable prices in the case there are some vulnerable buyers, however, those who are experienced with the buyers know just what to say and behave to lower the prices. Prices can be lowered to as much as 50%! Although this may be loss to the seller, the buyer will return home with their desired goods with a huge grin across their faces.
Pasar malam에서 쇼핑하는 것은 확실히 재미가 있으며 이것은 흥정의 묘미이다. 보통, 판매자들은 만만한 구매자들에게 바가지를 씌운다. 그러나, 경험이 많은 구매자들은 가격을 낮추기 위해 무엇을 말하고 어떻게 행동해야 하는지 알고 있다. 가격은 50%나 낮아질 수 있다! 비록 이것이 판매자에게는 손해겠지만, 구매자들은 만면에 웃음을 띠며 원하던 상품을 가지고 집으로 돌아갈 수 있다.

Pasar malams can be the perfect place for tourists as well. The reason for this is because Pasar malams are often distinguished by ethnicity. Some of this ethnicity includes Malay, Chinese and Hindu. Thus, for example, in a Malay Pasar malam, they may have stalls that sell certain Malay specialty goods that represent their religion and culture. In this one Pasar malam I once visited, they sold prayer supplies used by Hindus and although it was all new and unfamiliar, it was interesting to see all the accessories that they utilized.

Pasar malam은 여행자들에게도 완벽한 장소이다. 이것은 Pasar malam이 보통 민족성으로 구별되기 때문이다. 이 민족성에는 말레이시아, 중국, 힌두가 포함된다. 그러므로, 예를 들어, 말레이시아 Pasar malam에는 그들의 종교와 문화를 나타내는 특정한 말레이시아 상품을 파는 가판대가 있을 수 있다. 필자가 방문한 한 Pasar malam에서는 힌두교에서 쓰이는 기도 용품을 팔고 있었으며 이것이 새롭고 낯설기는 하더라도, 그들이 사용하는 장신구들을 보는 것은 흥미로웠다.

Personally, I thought it made the culture more beautiful to the eyes. Usually in Korea, one would not be able to find these exclusive stalls selling these exquisite items due to the differing culture of the 2 main religions in Korea of Buddhism and Christianity.

개인적으로, 나는 Pasar malam이 시각적으로 보다 아름다운 문화를 만든다고 생각한다. 보통 한국에서는, 불교와 기독교라는 두 주요 종교의 다른 문화 때문에 이러한 정교한 물품들을 파는 독점적인 가판대를 찾을 수 없다.

One of the personal favorite things that I really enjoy about shopping in Pasar malams are the assorted tropical fruits that are for sale. This includes the distinct smelling Malaysian fruit, ‘Durian’. In Korea, I find myself getting tired of the similar fruits being sold in the markets and so I would say this is one of the features of a Malaysian traditional market I dearly miss. 
필자가 Pasar malam에서 쇼핑하기 좋아하는 개인적 애호품 중 하나는 갖은 열대 과일이다. 여기에는 두드러지는 냄새의 말레이시아 과일 ‘두리안’이 포함된다. 한국에서 필자는 시장에서 두리안과 비슷한 과일을 찾으러 다니는 데 지쳤고 때문에 내가 말레이시아의 전통 시장을 정말로 그리워하는 이유 중의 하나가 이것이라 말할 수 있다.
