Looking back to the past

I honestly did not watch a lot of Malaysian films. Still, before I came to Korea, when I was around 12 years old, I remember watching one specific film in particular. This film was released in 2003 in Malaysia and it was produced by Filem Negara Malaysia and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS). A director named Adman Salleh directed this film and although this film consisted of some vicious violence, sexual assaults and pervasive languages, it spoke the truth about the history of Malaysia and that was what showed me great perspective into the history of Malaysia at a young age.  

나는 솔직히 말레이시아 영화를 많이 보지 않았다. 그래도 내가 12 살때 에 유일하게 본 말레이 영화가 있다. 이 영화는 말레이시아에서 2003 년 출시되었고Filem Negara Malaysia 와the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS)에 의해 제작되었습니다. Adman Salleh이라는 분이 영화를 감독이였고 이 영화는 악랄한 폭력, 성폭행 및 보급 언어로 구성되어 있지만, 그래도 말레이시아의 역사에 대한 진실을 이야기하였고 말레이시아의 역사에 대하여 나에세 젊은 나이에 큰 관심을 주었다.

The language of this film was in Malay, so I honestly had to look at the subtitles as my Malay was not perfectly fluent and I was still at a learning phase. However, weirdly it felt more educational to watch the film with the subtitles to read along with it.  The casts who appeared in the film were not as famous as your everyday Hollywood stars, so whereas others may go to watch a film due to their favorite stars appearing in it, I had the urge to watch ‘Paloh’ to get an insight about the historical outlook of the country I was living in. This is because since I went to an international school, we learnt about world history and not Malaysian history, hence my curiosity about this matter.

이 영화의 언어는 말레이어이었다. 그래서 나는 말레이어를 완벽하게 유창 하지 않고 아직도 학습 단계에있었기 때문에 자막을 보며 내용을 소화하였다. 그러나, 이상하게도 영화를 보며 자막을 함께 읽는게 영화를 감상할때 더 교육적으로 느껴져서 좋았다. 이 영화에서 나오는 배우자들은 일상 헐리우드 스타처럼 유명하지 않았지만 그런 이유로 이 영화를 보러 가지 않았고 나는 국제 학교를 다녔기 때문에 세계 역사에 대해서만 알게 되었고 말레이시아 역사에 대해서 호기심이 생겨서 이 영화 소식을 듣고 보러가게 되었다. 

So, here is the plot of the story. This movie was set in the small town of Paloh, Johor and it basically tells the story about the confrontation between the Communist Party of Malaya with the Japanese occupying force. The story is based on 4 friends who decide to serve the Japanese Police Force in order to survive. These 4 friends- Ahmad, Puteh, Harun and Osman had a solid plan, however things started to get complicated when Ahmad and Puteh both fell in love with girls from a different world, culture and most importantly opposing sides. The twist of the story was that in truth, the girl that Ahmad fell in love with named Swee Lan was actually asked by her father to seduce Ahmad to fall for her. Nevertheless, the plan became uncertain when Swee Lan actually fell for Ahmad herself and she was in the position to either betray Ahmad (her lover) or obey her father’s rules.

이 영화의 줄거리다. 이 영화Paloh에서는, Johor라는 작은 마을에서 일어난 이야기다. 기본적으로 일본 점령 힘으로 말레이시아의 공산당 사이의 대립에 대한 이야기다. 이 이야기는 살아 남기 위해 일본 경찰청를 제공하기로 결정한 넷 친구에 기반을두고 있다. 이 4 친구 - Ahmad, Puteh, Harun와 Osman은 처음부터 계획을 만들고 마음을 단단히 먹었지만, 어느날 Ahmad와 Puteh는 다른 세계와 문화인 여자들과 사랑에 빠지게 되었다. 가장 중요하게 이 여자들은 Ahmad와 Puteh가 도와주는 사람들과 대비하는 가정에서 온 사람들이었다.  이 야기의 반전은 사실은, Ahmad가 사랑에 빠진 그녀는 실제로 그녀와 사랑에 빠지게 Ahmad를 유혹하라고 그녀의 아버지에 의해 요청으로 친해진 것이었다. 그럼에도 불구하게, 그녀도 실제로 Ahmad 자신에 진심으로 사랑에 빠져 그녀는 결국에는 Ahmad (애인)를 배신하든 또는 그녀의 아버지의 규칙을 준수하든 고민스러운 위치에 있기 되었다. 

Although this may all seem like a love story amidst the combat between the two forces, I can say that it really made you feel more personal feelings towards the plot because since we were not actually there to experience history first hand, we will never know what it would have been like. But, by looking at the lives of some particular people and how they are in a situation that we might face today as well, it brings out compassion within us and we are able to better relate to the circumstances and sense how hard it would have been in those days.

이 모든 이야기는 사랑 이야기처럼 보일 수도 있지만 우리가 역사를 첫번째 손으로 직접 경험하고자 못하고 실제로 거기에 없었기 때문에, 우리는 결코 알지 못할 것이라고 생각을 한다. 하지만, 어느 한 사람의 삶을 보면서 우리 안에 연민을 가져오고 그 상황 대해서 이해심이 더 생기며 그 시기에 얼마나 힘든었을까 생각하게 된다. 그 당시 인치 그렇게 할 수 밖에 없었을꺼라고 배려심도 생기며 나한테는 역사의 감동이 느껴진다.
